about

Emily Lacy’s newest record reinterprets popular songs of the 1990’s as modern day folk texts, somehow suggesting that all music eventually becomes one song. Or maybe she's suggesting that all songs become both medium and material for artists of the future to puncture like tin, repurpose, or massage gently like clay. Or, put yet still another way, that all music is defined by the listener? Investigating the days of her youth, Lacy who turned 10 in 1990, had not yet even begun to play music herself when she heard these songs for the first time. In "Heart on the Floor / Songs of the 90’s", she explores and celebrates the intimacy of a period which feels so far removed from our internet-based present, so tied to another ethos of language and economics (both musical and global), and her experiments with guitars, voice, and harmony feel as if she were really only making drawings or paintings of these songs, rather than straight “covers”, which becomes it's own kind of revelation in her bizarre form of natural light. To journey through these songs with her is to engage in your own act of self-discovery, a vicarious coming of age twenty to thirty years after the fact. True to her historical form, on this record you will find the full electromagnetic spectrum of the Emily Lacy sound, encompassing acoustic and electric, folk and noise, sound and art, and everything in between. The album acts as a love letter to some of the most influential music of her life, where folk, rock and punk collided in what became grunge and alternative. Also notable is that growing up in rural Oregon, the music scenes in Portland and Seattle that became exported as mass cultural iconography on MTV, embodied the first time the artist ever saw her region of the country represented on the world stage, and the first time she understood that musical identity could really be appropriated. It’s through that lens then, that in this record you’re invited to look back and investigate what it means to make a song and record it.
